Open PhD positions
If are you interested in understanding how species interact and evolve in communities, Giulia is recruiting PhD students at Monash University (Melbourne, Australia) from 1 September 2025. The specific PhD project can be defined according to interests of the candidate, within the broader research interests of the group but we are currently looking for candidates interested in this project:
Understanding how species physiology and ecological interactions together drive community functioning.
The size and diversity of species is changing rapidly due to anthropogenic activities. Organisms of different sizes consume and uptake resources at different rates because metabolism and size do not increase proportionally. Therefore, changes in community composition can impact the functioning of ecosystems by altering energy fluxes.
The goal of this project is to understand how biodiversity changes affect community productivity and stability; and to determine the contribution of species traits (such as size, metabolism, and competitive ability) in either driving or buffering change at the community-level. These questions can also be extended to an evolutionary framework, using experimental evolution to study eco-evolutionary dynamics and improve our ability to predict the evolution of communities.
All projects in our lab will use phytoplankton as a model system and will require generating novel data through the execution of lab experiments. There will be opportunities to continue/develop collaborations within Australia and internationally.
Eligibility and scholarship information:
Please see PhD advertisement here for details, scholarship information, and how to submit an application: https://www.findaphd.com/phds/project/understanding-how-species-physiology-and-ecological-interactions-together-drive-community-functioning/?p185543
Postdoc positions
Currently we do not have funded postdoc positions but I am happy to discuss with interested candidates and support applications for postdoctoral fellowships (DECRA, HFSP, Marie Curie etc) if there is mutual interest. If you would like to get in touch about an application, contact Giulia explaining your research interests and how they fit with the lab - please also attach a copy of your CV.
